EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

For the parents of the children who are learning Arabic

What does the research involve? This research is a part of the Applied Linguistics Program towards a PhD Degree in Applied Linguistics at Monash University. In this part of the research, Abdulwdood is collecting surveys from the parents of children who are learning Arabic. The survey will be about 5 minutes long and will generally ask about the children’s experience in learning Arabic in Australia. The survey is online and can be filled through your mobile phone.

Why were you chosen for this research? Because you are a parent of a child who is learning Arabic in Australia.

Consenting to participate in the project and withdrawing from the research: Participating in this project is voluntary, and you have the right to withdraw from further participation at any stage while filling out the survey. However, as this survey is anonymous, we are not able to remove your data after submitting the online survey because we cannot identify you. We can only identify you if you provide your contact details at the end of the survey. In this case, you can withdraw your data within one week of the date of submission. You may also request that specific responses are removed from your data.

Possible benefits and risks to participants: There is no risk or discomfort beyond everyday life in participating in this project, and the finding from this project might help for more effective and improved Arabic teaching and learning.

Confidentiality: Your data will be treated as anonymous, and the researcher will not be able to identify you. However, if you provide your contact details, it will not be included in any published material and nothing about you will be revealed.

Digital data will also be stored digitally in Abdulwdood’s Monash OneDrive account.

After the completion of this project, the data will be sent to Monash University where it will be kept on campus premises in a secure place for 5 years. During this time, nobody will have access to the data on campus except the chief investigator. If the data is no longer needed, the university will take reasonable steps to destroy or permanently de-identify your personal information.

Results: The findings of this project may be published as a journal article or a conference presentation.
